“Too much sanity may be madness – and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!”

As the Spanish Inquisition terrorises a nation, Miguel de Cervantes is thrown in prison with his manservant for offenses against the church. Faced with the threat of his fellow prisoners burning his precious manuscript, Cervantes stages a mock trial to defend his work, performing his fantastical story as Don Quixote, a mad knight that fights windmills as giants and pursues the love of prostitute Aldonza as his idealised lady, Dulcinea.

Dale Wasserman’s acclaimed 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote was inspired by the original two-part novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha written by the real Miguel de Cervantes in 1605 and1615, and was the inspiration for the 1965 Broadway musical The Man of the Mancha, adapted by Wasserman from his original work. Famous for iconic songs such as ‘The Impossible Dream’ by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion and after winning five Tony Awards, in 1972 the play was adapted into a film starring Peter O’Toole and Sophia Loren.
