The development of the Clifftown Studios & Theatre has been made possible as a result of investment by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), through its Investing in Communities programme run by the Thames Gateway South Essex Partnership (TGSEP). Funding was also granted by the Homes and Communities Agency, working with Renaissance Southend Ltd.

Community activities at Clifftown Studios

A variety of activities, both theatrical and general arts based, takes place in Clifftown Studios and in the Community. This includes public workshops, arts taster sessions, outreach youth work and specific themed or community performances and projects.

If you would like to be kept informed of upcoming activities or have a group who would like to work with us please contact Clare Cook on ccook@essex.ac.uk

The University of Essex seeks to embed Clifftown Studios as a key part of the cultural provision for the Southend area through its development as a teaching facility for East 15 Acting School, a performance space for East 15 and touring productions and a community venue.

The three areas identified for development are Community Participants, People Assisted with Skills Development, and Community/Voluntary Organisations Supported. Work in these areas is at various levels of development and have not yet reached their peak level of output. These activities sit alongside the University of Essex academic programme based in Clifftown Studios; we have ensured their integration to embed activities as a function of the building and part of the student experience.

  1. Community Participation

This consists of members of local and regional communities that access and are benefiting from the performances and activities at Clifftown Studios.

  1. Skills Development

This involves individuals being assisted with skills development at a minimum engagement level of 6 hours per person. This may also be outside the Clifftown Studios.

  1. Community / Voluntary Organisations

Through use of the new facilities, partnership activities or support in kind some local community groups and voluntary organisations benefit from the creation of Clifftown Studios.
